Public hospitals

Public hospitals in Malta have a long and strong history. The public hospital here owns the most modern medical facilities in Europe and top healthcare services. The government pays for the public health system through a contribution tax and pays for almost every treatment, including hospitalizations, prescriptions, pregnancy and childbirth, surgery, and rehabilitation.

The government provides primary health care through 8 medical centers spread across the Maltese Islands. Besides general practitioners and nursing services, all Maltese Medical Centers also provide preventive, curative and rehabilitation services such as the prenatal and postpartum clinic, diabetes clinic, ophthalmology clinic, psychiatric clinic, physiotherapy treatment, …

 Private hospitals

In addition to the system of public health care services, the private health care regime is also of great interest to the people. More and more locals buy private health insurance and some choose to use the services of General Practitioners and Private Consultants. Large employers often contract private doctors to meet employee needs. Most doctors working in public hospitals have private clinics.

Almost every pharmacy across Malta and Gozo offers GP services between certain hours. However, some pharmacies have specialist doctors and no appointment is required because doctors work on a unit basis. To see a doctor in a pharmacy costs about 10 euros and this is considered a private healthcare service.
