Thriving industries

1. Tourism and Hospitality

As one of Greece’s key economic sectors, tourism plays an extremely important role in job creation. In 2022, the tourism industry contributes 25.4% of GDP and employs about 21% of Greece’s workforce. In addition to direct positions such as hotel and restaurant staff, the tourism industry also requires experts in management, marketing and information technology to develop a booking system, online services. This development has helped create thousands of new jobs each year, especially during the peak tourist season.

2. Information and communication technology

Digital technology is opening up great job opportunities for young people in Greece. According to data from the Greek National Statistical Office (ELSTAT), the number of startups in the field of information technology has grown by more than 30% from 2020 to 2023. This industry has not only grown in major cities such as Athens and Thessaloniki but has also spread to other regions. The increase in startups as well as foreign companies investing in Greece has created thousands of jobs for programmers, cybersecurity specialists, and data analysts.

3. Renewable energy industry

Greece is working to transition to renewable energy sources, including solar and wind energy. According to data from the Greek Ministry of Environment and Energy, renewable energy currently accounts for about 35% of the country’s total electricity production, and the goal is to reach 60% by 2030. The industry promises to create many job opportunities for energy engineers, researchers and technical professionals, with thousands of new jobs already created in wind and solar energy projects.

4. Agriculture and Food Technology

Agricultural production, especially organic products, is also becoming a growing industry. In 2021, agriculture accounted for about 4.1% of GDP, with more than 13% of the workforce involved in this industry. The combination of traditional agriculture and modern food technology has opened up many new opportunities. New farming techniques such as smart agriculture and clean food processing processes have created conditions for many young people to participate in this profession, especially in the field of organic products.

Challenges in the labor market

Despite the opportunities, the Greek labor market is still facing many challenges. The unemployment rate for young people (aged 15-24) remains high, reaching around 28.3% at the end of 2022, one of the highest in the European Union. Although the overall unemployment rate has fallen from a peak of 27.5% in 2013 to 11.6% in 2022, young people still struggle to find work due to a lack of experience and high skill requirements from employers.

Support programs and skills development opportunities

Greece has implemented many support programs for young people through vocational training courses and policies to encourage entrepreneurship. The “Digital Transformation Bible 2020-2025” program is a major initiative from the government to promote digital skills for the young workforce. According to data from the Greek Ministry of Education, more than 30,000 students and young people participated in digital skills training courses in 2022. In addition, the Greek National Investment Development Fund (EIF) has also funded hundreds of startups in the fields of technology and media, creating conditions for young people to start businesses.

Universities and educational institutions are also partnering with businesses to offer internship programs and job opportunities immediately after graduation. In 2022, more than 65% of graduates from internship programs have the opportunity to be formally employed, helping to reduce the unemployment rate and enhance the adaptability of young people to the labor market.

Conclude

With the continuous development of new industries and support programs, Greece’s labor market is becoming increasingly attractive to young people. Although challenges remain, with proper preparation in skills and knowledge, young Greeks can find suitable job opportunities and build sustainable careers. Greece is emerging as a promising environment where young people can maximize their potential and contribute to the country’s economic growth.
